So you’re trying to create influence on social media but you don’t know where to start. Girl, I’ve got you. Influencer marketing has become so prevalent in today’s society so no wonder you want to get in on it. Here’s the kicker: there’s SO much content out there, how are you going to stand out? The common missing element I’m seeing when I do social media audits on my students’ profiles is that they aren’t sticking out. If you don’t know how to be seen on social media, people are going to scroll right past your account. Today I’m going to share with you how to find your “thing” on social media and stand out to your niche audience.
Social media is more competitive now than it’s ever been. Not only are there billions of people on all of these platforms but there’s also more paid advertising than ever before. In order to stand out on social media, you need to narrow in on your topic that you want to teach and master your content. If you think you already know what your teaching topic is, I’d love for you to share it with us in the comments below with your social media handles!
If I were to log onto your social media right now, would I notice what you’re teaching right away? Your “thing” shouldn’t be too broad and it shouldn’t be so specific that you don’t have any subtopics to talk about. I know this process seems confusing so I’m going to give you three main practices that you should be using to navigate your master topic and teach your followers in a simple way for them to retain.
- Start by thinking about what you’re passionate about, regardless if you think you can monetize it.
It’s time to start journaling! Get out a pen and paper and start by jotting down what your hobbies are. List what your favorite activities are, what you do in your day-to-day routine, and your favorite past time activities. Don’t think about how you can make money with them because that will deter you from writing everything down.
- Consider your past experiences, both personal and professional.
People always discount themselves and say they don’t have any experience because they’ve “been job hopping for 20 years” or are “just a mom with no experience”. All of those things give you life-experience you can teach others about, you just need to think deeper into it! Also, ask your friends what advice they would come to you for! Maybe they have some ideas that you wouldn’t even think about. Ask your audience to take a poll. You can poll your current audience…even if it’s not a lot of people. For example, “Hey, everyone! I’m putting some content together for the next month and these are the topics I’m thinking about covering. Which would you like to hear about/think I would be good at sharing?” Email this poll/survey out to your list, post on your Instagram story, and post it in your Facebook communities.
- Explore what you’re learning.
You don’t need to be light years ahead of your audience but you should definitely be doing more research than them. If you’re going to teach your audience about these topic/s then you need to dive deeper into what you’re learning about. Remember: comparison is the thief of joy. Don’t compare yourself to other influencers in your field or else you will get jealous of their progress and slow yours down.
In order to build online you have to be memorable. Yes, you have to build your know-like-trust factor but that isn’t always enough. People like routines. People like familiarity. People like simplicity. You need to be the one that they expect to hear from, to see, and to listen to when it comes to your “thing”! The inconsistency-route is not going to work anymore. It’s time to buckle down and commit to your decision to build online. Don’t forget to comment below what your teaching topic is!
