We’re gettin’ real today, y’all! I want to share with you a bit about my personal struggle with my money mindset journey and how my family and I overcame it to become debt free. Money is never an easy subject to talk about but I’m sharing this journey with you because I want you to see exactly what I did to get out of 6 figures of debt and actually surpass 2 million dollars in revenue for my business.
I tried for many, many, MANY years to become debt free – probably 15 years – and I was so stuck in my spending habits and money blocks that I couldn’t, for the life of me, figure out how to get out of debt and stop spending unnecessary money. Some of what I talk about in this post is going to be money secrets that my husband and I have learned to embody to become debt free and develop healthy spending habits.
My first step to developing a healthier money mindset was a program called Financial Peace University led by the money extraordinaire, Dave Ramsey. I highly recommend getting this book on audible if you are, in any way, struggling with your money. Not only did this program help get my family and I out of debt, but it helped me develop and maintain a healthy money mindset and commit to the process. One of the most crucial steps in the process of paying off debt and getting in control of your money is to reframe your mindset. Think about your future plans. You need to have a vision in mind otherwise you’re going to constantly be battling your own mind wondering why you’re going through all of this hardship.
The next resource I want you to check out is Dave Ramsey’s book, Total Money Makeover. This book taught me the importance of putting $1k into an emergency fund before paying off any debt. It’s an easy step-by-step process to follow, but your mindset is what’s going to keep you going. Once you’ve saved your $1k into your emergency fund, then it’s time to start tackling the debt. Start with the small bills first and then move your way up. It helps you ease yourself into paying back your debts and doesn’t overwhelm you with your highest paying debts quite yet.
This is important, you need to make sure that you are your partner are on the same page about your money spending habits. I sat down with my husband when I realized how our budget was and we came up with the solution together. We decided it was time to stop spending any money on ourselves and seriously get our spending habits under control. We did not spend any money on ourselves for well over a year. We wore the same clothes we’d been wearing for 10 years. We didn’t go on dates. We didn’t buy ourselves coffee at the coffee shops anymore. We Stopped. Spending. Money.
Lastly, add a stream of income. If you’re struggling to conquer your money mindset and get your savings under control, you need to add a stream of income.
I really hope these little tidbits helped you get a headstart in the right direction when it comes to conquering your debt and developing a healthy money mindset.
