As you know, I’m a huge advocate of building on more than one platform (listen here) but making the transition over to Instagram for the first time can feel a bit foreign. It is so different than Facebook and the types of people you’ll be mingling with also utilize the app in a very different way. Let’s take a look at how it’s currently being used and what you can do to stand out!

Right now, if I opened up my Instagram message inbox, I would have 99% of the messages be from weird dudes or new followers spamming me to opt into their email list or buy their service. It really is frustrating at first, but once you realize how you can use this to your advantage, you are going to totally rock it.

What I want to encourage you to do is to start making real connections on Instagram with new followers. I want you to get to know them a bit by following their newsfeed and stories. Then, I want you to reach out in messenger. You’re not going to pitch them, but instead you’re going to connect with them. Find some common ground. Compliment them. Figure out how you can offer a solution once you uncover their pain points. See what you can do to support them, mentor them and ultimately, serve them.

I promise you, if you implement this very unique strategy, people will look forward to seeing your name in their inbox. Be different. Stand out on Instagram.
