How to Beat the Algorithm

Are you seeing your engagement is down and fewer people seeing your stuff? Are you wondering how to get to the top of the newsfeed and totally crush it? Well, I am going to tell you how! Here are my secrets to beat the algorithm.

What is the algorithm?

The algorithm is a rating that your account has, so we all have algorithm scores. The algorithm is proprietary and changes all the time, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, or Pinterest. For example, we were getting 1.5 million views per month on our Pinterest, then they did a huge algorithm reset, and it dropped down. So now we’re having to build it back up. Every platform has algorithm ratings. Have any of you had a Reel or a TikTok go viral? I have one that has over a hundred thousand views on it. It took me 30 seconds to make, and it went viral because of the algorithm.

What does it mean to beat the algorithm?

You want to understand that if you’re showing up, you are playing the game the platform has. What we’re actually doing is rising to the top of the newsfeed. When I post something on social media, and since I have a high algorithm score on all my accounts, I’m going to show up at the top of the newsfeed.

This is a personal competition to say to yourself, “How can I do my best to get in front of as many people as possible?” I’m always asking myself that question. I don’t compare myself to other people to see how they are doing. I look at what I’m doing and know the value I have to give.

You have to get in front of as many people as possible. And this is how you do it.

#1: Friend requests.

Now let’s dig into this a little bit because you’ve heard all kinds of things about friending people. This isn’t brand new information, but let’s talk about the specifics here. You’re going to send friend requests on Facebook, and you can even do this on Instagram for followers, but let’s just stick with Facebook. Request about 20 people per day and don’t skip. Not even for the the weekend. I can’t make any guarantees, but usually within a week or two, suddenly you’re going to have an influx of inbound friend requests from other people. You know how sometimes when you’re on Facebook looking at posts, it will have a suggested friend section where it’s suggesting people to you. This is how people are finding you.

If you send friend requests consistently every day, you have an opportunity to become a suggested friend. So instead of being dependent upon your outbound friend requesting, you’re going to get an influx of all-new friend requests. And when that happens, that means you have beaten the algorithm with the friending. Also, make sure you are friend requesting your avatar. Who you’re friending is telling Facebook so much, including who they should suggest your profile to.

#2: Post stories a couple of times per day.

This is going to put you at the front of the list. Now I am not saying to constantly create stories and be on your phone all the time. I like to create all my stories once a day. I have reminders that go off, now I have a team that helps me. But when I started, I did this all myself. I would put a little note, or a Google calendar reminder, throughout the day to post stories. I always did it at least twice a day. The more frequently you post, the better, so load up all your stories and have all of them ready. You can save them all in a folder on the app. Then when you’re ready, just export them to your camera roll or schedule them out.

#3: Only post original content.

One great post a day is all you need. If you want to post twice a day, you can do that too. Don’t just keep posting all day to post all day. I would rather you have one good post with 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 comments than you posting five times in a day with them not having engagement. It’s not good for your account to have many posts on there that aren’t getting engagement. It’s better to have one good one. If you’re not sure how often to post, start with never missing a day. Make it non-negotiable, but really think it through. You are slowly going to increase your algorithm rating.

Make sure the content you are posting is original. You do not want to be posting memories on your wall. Those you are going to want to throw in your stories. It’s already been posted on Facebook, so why post it again. You also don’t want to share other people’s stuff. Now let’s say you want to share a Facebook Live because you have a lot of entrepreneurs in your audience. Share it in a Facebook group. But if you share a live on your wall, you’re probably not going to get a lot of traction.

#4: Comment on your last three posts

By doing this you will bump them up back into the newsfeed. If you have a really good curiosity post, comment on it to bring it back to the top of the newsfeed. Guess what happens? Every single person who reacted to it or commented will get notified. They go and click on the notification and they are now looking at your content again. Now you’re getting fresh traffic coming to your content.

#5: Reciprocate with new leads.

Imagine just getting a new friend on Facebook. Go over to their page and start engaging on her stuff. You don’t want to look all spammy, so comment on a few things. Go to their stories and check out all their stuff. You want to let them know you’re there. This tells Facebook you are interested in their stuff. Facebook is all about relationships. Facebook will then start to show your new friend your stuff.

How many of you have been in messenger? Let’s say you have been chatting up a prospect in messenger. The next time you go on Facebook, their posts are right there. It’s just the same when you are on Amazon and it’s suggesting cute boots you saw on another website. It’s all talking to each other. If you are proactively getting to know your friends and new leads, Facebook is going to show your stuff to them.

You are creating curiosity when you do these strategies. You have to be genuine, or people will feel you are really not wanting to get to know them. Start paying attention, build relationships, and really get to know your people.

Go and beat that algorithm, Goal Diggers!
