Since last year, the percentage of organic content has dropped by almost 30% – so what does that mean for you? If you’re on your newsfeed, there’s more paid advertisements than ever before. There’s only so much content that can be seen on your newsfeed, and since there’s more ads being shown, less of your content is being displayed on others’ feeds. Now, more than ever, it’s important to become a master marketer and learn how to beat the algorithm.
Algorithm is your behind-the-scenes rating that each social platform calculates; think of it as the health of your account. When you have a high algorithm rating, your content is more likely to get in front of other people. Engagement is the action that your account is receiving, or, the interaction of your direct audience. Your engagement dictates your algorithm. I am going to share with you five steps to help you beat the algorithm. These principles have stood the test of time and are the absolute best way to boost engagement and bump up the health of your account!
- Be consistent.
I know you’ve heard me say this a million times…but do you know why you need to be consistent? Firstly, it is key to building your know-like-trust factor and secondly, you need to hold your place in other peoples’ newsfeeds. People need to know that they can rely on you.
- Post original content.
Stop sharing other peoples’ links on your wall; if they wanted to see others’ content, then they would visit that site or social channel. Also, be sure that you’re not re-purposing too much old content, otherwise it’s not original content anymore – people have already seen it multiple times.
- Use graphics sparingly.
Instagram and Pinterest are a good place to use graphics, but be sure to keep it to a minimum. On your Facebook profile, they are not looking for graphics, they’re looking for selfies. The reason why graphics don’t do well on your Facebook profile is because Facebook can tell that you created them on an editing site (Canva, PicMonkey, etc.) and Facebook was not meant for graphics like that to be displayed. They want a majority of selfies to be displayed because that’s what Facebook was created for, to tell stories through your photos. Selfies tell a story and people feel connected to you when they see your face. They stop the scroll!
- Ask a question in every post.
Social media is a competitive space. Make sure you’re focused on driving home your engagement and putting yourself out there. You want people to interact with your content!
- Reciprocate.
This step alone can 10x your algorithm. When people engage with you, go return the favor by commenting on their content! Facebook loves to see you interact with your audience. Bonus tip: Create a Facebook friends list, that way, every time you’re meeting new people you can add them to your Facebook list and when you click that list on your profile it will only populate the prospects you’re wanting to interact with. This allows you to intentionally engage with your audience’s content.
Like I said previously, these steps have withstood the test of time and are reliable ways to blow up your engagement and beat your algorithm. If you feel like your engagement is going down and you’re doing something to make it that way, it’s not you, it’s the fact that there are more paid ads than ever before. Stick with it.
