Don’t Make These Mistakes When Showing Up Online

There are many things I notice first-time-business-builders struggling with and not knowing what steps to take when it comes to showing up on social media. I am here to put your worries at rest and share 10 mistakes that I notice entrepreneurs are making in their online business. This might seem overwhelming but don’t take it all on at once if that will set you back, start with one task and build from there.

The 10 biggest mistakes you might be making in your business right now are:

  1. You are too product or business-heavy on your profile.

As an entrepreneur, it is your goal to recruit customers and attract leads to your business. However, you are not going to do that just by dropping links and product photos on your profile. People are not likely to purchase a product or service if they have no background information or don’t know the seller. You are not supposed to be selling on your personal Facebook page anyways, so start putting value-driven content out there! I want you to do an audit of your social media pages and make sure that 80% of your content is value-driven and the other 20% is made up of curiosity posts and indirect questions. Did you know you only needed one strong curiosity post per month about your product and business? Get to it!

  1. I notice a lot of you are posting without a call-to-action.

A call to action is when you tell the listener or viewer to go visit your website or read your blog; something that brings them to interact with more of your content. The reason some of our content is not being displayed online is because people aren’t interacting with it. If people don’t interact, the Facebook algorithm will not promote it to the top of people’s pages and it will not get seen. Include a call-to-action that gets people’s attention and encourages them to comment/like/or share your post.

  1. People are not posting original content.

What I mean by original content is that people are not posting photos or videos of them doing normal daily tasks such as; taking the dog for a walk, playing with your kids at the park, date night with your husband, etc. I understand that posting photos of yourself is not the most fun thing to do, but it’s necessary to build your know-like-trust factor with your audience.

  1. I notice that there is no curiosity being built around your product or business.

When you create curiosity in your content about your product, it gives other people an opportunity to come and engage with you. Stop link dropping everywhere and get really good at asking questions.

  1. I’m not seeing enough selfies!

I understand that posting can be a heavy task to those who are not confident in their looks or style. It’s important to work on your mindset and build the confidence to be able to post photos of yourself more. There’s nothing more interesting than yourself. People come to your page to see you and you have to be yourself in order to gain more attraction. A couple of suggestions: portrait mode on the iPhone is a lifesaver, using a timer helps reduce blurry photos of you, and finding the perfect lighting will make a world of difference!  It takes 30 days of people seeing your content before they feel like they know you and they need to be seeing some selfies. If you don’t have those selfies up, it’s going to take a lot longer. Show that beautiful smile to the world, Goal Digger!

  1. You’re not being vulnerable enough.

Stop being so worried about showing off who you really are. If you’re feeling fear about posting vulnerable content, that means that greatness is on the other side. People need to see that others are being vulnerable online so they build the willpower to do the same for themselves. Being vulnerable invites your audience to engage with you and come to an understanding of who you really are as a person.

  1. I notice a lack of consistency with posting.

In my opinion, a lack of consistency is correlated to a lack of commitment to a specific goal, mission, vision, or purpose. When you get clarity around your content and come to terms with understanding why you’re posting, you will show up every day! Consistency is a discipline that you need to learn how to develop and in order to build trust with your audience, you need to show up every day. People look for the alpha dog – so on social media they’re going to look for the person who is showing up. Let that be you!!

  1. Are you sending links without asking questions?

We’re so done with cold messaging, spamming, and link dropping! That is so 2019. Just because someone comments on one of your posts, it does not give you permission to link drop in their messenger. When we ask the important, valuable questions, we uncover our audiences pain points and we are then able to provide something of value to them.

  1. I notice a lot of people are not following up.

This is a big no-no in this industry. You need to find a way to get your leads organized and make sure you’re following up with them. If you’re not following up, you’re leaving money on the table.

  1. Last but not least, people are not being clear on their avatar and who they are serving.

If you’re not being clear with your content about who exactly you’re wanting to reach out to, people are not going to know at all what you’re going on about. Make sure that you know exactly who you are reaching out to and figuring out how to assemble your content around their preferences. For example, if you’re selling anti-aging skin cream then your goal is to create content that attracts older women; make sure that your content is displaying that.
