How to Build An Engaged Audience on Facebook

How do you know that your content is getting in front of the right people? Well, one huge advantage I tell my students is to make sure that your Facebook friends list is filled with friends that match your ideal avatar. In today’s blog, I’m going to walk you through, step-by-step, how I fill up my Facebook friends list as well as how I purge it to ensure that all of my content is reaching the right people. Let’s dive in!

If you want to build your brand/business/blog on social media and make it accessible on your phone, you need to be building your friends list with people who fit your ideal avatar. On the contrary, you need to be purging friends who don’t match your ideal avatar and friends that don’t interact with your content. Every 6 months, I purge my friends list. If there are people on my Facebook friends list who don’t interact/engage with my content within a 6-month period, then they don’t fit my ideal avatar and I don’t want to waste a connection with them. The people that are on my Facebook page, engaging and interacting, then of course, we’ll want them to stay!

Let me walk you through, step-by-step, how I find new people to connect with, how often I should connect with new people, and how I purge my current friends list.

Step 1: Go to your Facebook profile and visit your friends list. While you’re looking at your friends list, ask yourself: Is this person my ideal avatar? Obviously if they’re your family member or a long-term friend, you don’t want to purge them. However, for business purposes, if they don’t match your qualifying factors for an ideal avatar, it’s probably okay to purge them from your list.

Step 2: Pick someone on your personal friends list who is your ideal avatar and visit their friends list. The reason you’re going to do this is because you want to start friend requesting a maximum of 20 people per day. But, be careful, you need to look for two things: (1) That you have multiple mutual friends in common before you friend request (2) Hover over their profile and see if they have characteristics/qualities of your ideal avatar. If they have both of those things, friend request them! I like to do about 20 outbound friend requests per day. Don’t do any more than that, you might get put in Facebook jail and that is no fun.

The reason you are friend requesting 20 people per day is because when you purge your Facebook friends list, it will free up lots of people that you want to be getting in front of.

Bonus tip: You can also follow people instead of friend requesting them. Some Facebook profiles are set up where you have the option to follow the person rather than sending them a friend request. In this case, you can follow as many people in a day as you’d like. That’s up to you.

Last, but not least, be sure to check your inbox and accept friend requests that people send to you if they qualify. Also, be sure to check out the “Suggested Friends” section. That’s almost always a gold mine for qualifying ideal avatars.

This quick tip will help you get in front of the right people and build an engaged audience. Happy friend requesting!!
